PSounds of Christmas by Many Great Composers… Audience Singing, Too!
The Chorale is comprised of some of the best professional vocalists in the region. They also perform in several renowned ensembles, including the Academy of Vocal Arts, the Philadelphia Singers, New York Lyric Opera, Opera Philadelphia and the Santa Fe Opera.
The singing of Christmas carols dates back to Roman Times and the word “Carol” actually means a dance or song of praise and joy. Early carols were sung in Latin, but this changed around 1223 with St. Francis of Assisi’s Nativity Plays where people sang ‘canticles’ that told the story of the plays.
In Victorian times, in England and throughout Europe carols once again became popular. New Carols were created for singing in church, in homes and in the streets.
